From the Executive Director

I want to personally thank all the companies that have decided to help the mid-atlantic region take a major step forward towards renewable energy by joining forces at The Solar and Wind Expo 2010. The work you are doing helps create green jobs and at the same time contribute towards the health of the region.

With 2 weeks to go before the Expo, The Solar and Wind Expo team continues to be impressed by the support and buzz it is receiving. Outside links from other websites to the Expo website have increased from 47 to over 200 the past two months and growing. Our media partners have started running the TV ads we created to promote the Expo. They as well solidly believe in our mission and are showing us by running a few extra spots "on the house".

Expo vendors and exhibitors have also increased their numbers in the past two months. This illustrates very nicely that your Solar and Wind Expo team has done a phenomenal job of getting the word out...this is the renewable energy show to be in! Everyone wants to participate in the Expo. The Expo is solid!

The solidarity displayed by all has made, and will continue to make our renewable energy communities strong. Together we will make green a reality and make a difference in the world.

Tell everyone you know about the Expo. Tell them to come visit your booth at the Expo. Send an email blast to your customers. Continue to build on our collective momentum and let's together grow this community! Have a great Expo everyone!

Executive Director

Forty years after first Earth Day, first Solar and Wind Expo ready to give renewable energy a boost
by Alan Cohen

Last week, we marked the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day, which helped create a groundswell of concern about our environment and initiate nearly countless efforts to take better care it, for current and future generations.  Now, 40 years later, we’re looking at a new era in which renewable energy and energy efficiency can not only significantly better our environment and reduce our carbon footprint, but also save homeowners, businesses and governments billions in energy costs and make us more energy-independent/self-reliant.

The first Solar and Wind Expo will help advance renewable energy in Maryland and the mid-Atlantic by connecting homeowners, businesses and government agencies with solar, wind and geothermal energy providers, all in one location.  In addition, attendees will be able to learn about – and experience – renewable energy in many other ways at the Expo. Here’s a rundown of some of the exciting things visitors to this innovative, three-day event will be able to do:

Paul Scott with a GM Volt

  • See, touch and learn about solar, wind and geothermal energy devices directly from top manufacturers, and suppliers.
  • Attend informative seminars all weekend long on solar, wind and geothermal energy, green building design, renewable energy financing and much more.
  • Tour the “Living Zero Home,” an educational modular home that toured the U.S. last year, for great ideas on how to save energy and money.
  • Hear keynote speaker Bob Dixson, the inspirational mayor of Greensburg, Kansas, tell how his town is rebuilding “all-green” after being devastated by a tornado just three short years ago, in May 2007.
  • Let your children participate in the fun and educational “Solar and Wind Expo Renewable Energy Scavenger Hunt.”
  • See electric vehicles, including the all-electric Tesla sports car and the Extreme Bug-E, a three-wheeled, solar/electric motorcycle, which is being unveiled at the Expo before crossing the U.S.
  • Take home one of a number of great door prizes, including a nifty, all-electric Motorino scooter.
  • Buy a ticket for a chance to win a $1.9 million solar home, a 2010 Honda Insight hybrid or a number of other wonderful prizes in Maryland Public Television’s “Green Home Raffle.”
  • Catch a ride in an all-electric E-Cruiser from the parking lot to the Expo.

Crowd Management Training

Maryland requires all events to have a minimum number of participants trained as “Crowd Managers,” so we are asking you to please arrange for at least one person from each shift for your company to take the online class offered by the Maryland State Fire Marshal, at http://www.firemarshal.state.md.us/crowdmanager/. Please take this class. It will be worth it and it's easy.

Show how-to's

The following items should be on your to-do list:

  • When you receive the exhibitor's kit, read it carefully. You'll usually have to deal with two or more companies; one producing the conference and another responsible for renting equipment, etc.
  • If you can't afford to buy a custom display, be creative and make one. You can create a "studio" on the expo floor by renting stools and bringing along your own backdrop, lights, cameras and glossy "Tell Your Story" posters.
  • Create a realistic budget. Consider travel expenses: ground transportation, accommodations (ask employees to share rooms if possible), meals, snacks, giveaways and the cost of being out of the office for a few days.
  • Create a press kit or a press release and make sure it gets into the press room or distributed at the press conferences. Ask the show's press reps to arrange introductions to the reporters covering the show. Try to set up interviews in advance with local radio and newspaper reporters.
  • Set up a schedule that lets you work in the booth part of the day. You also need time to walk the floor to make contacts.
  • Bring a clever giveaway.
  • Bring a supply of chocolate or mints to serve as magnets to passersby.
  • Bring your friendliest employees. You want high-energy, happy people in your booth. They must be well-groomed, attentive and not chewing gum, sitting or talking to each other and absolutely no alcohol during show.

Word of the Month

Solidarity

Pronunciation: \ˌsä-lə-ˈda-rə-tē\

Function: noun

Etymology: French solidarité, from solidaire, “characterized by solidarity,” from Latin solidum, “whole sum,” from solidus, “solid”

- “A union of interests, purposes, or sympathies among members of a group; fellowship of responsibilities and interests”

- “Unity (as of a group or class) that produces or is based on community of interests, objectives, and standards”

Alternative energy will never achieve its deserved foothold unless its advocates achieve solidarity.

The Solar and Wind Expo team has worked very hard to engender solidarity and unity within the renewable energy community.

We, with you and our myriad supporters, are all on the same team and all of us are responsible for successfully promoting these alternative resources.

Our unity and resulting power in numbers will change public opinion about the attainability, accessibility, feasibility and reality of renewably energy now and for the future.

We together will sustain renewable energy solidly in the future as we change the current culture while we make green a reality today.
