LIMITED SPACE STILL AVAILABLE CALL - 410-439-1577

From the Executive Director:

Spring has sprung, finally! We are looking forward to a season custom-made for the property owner. As we put the finishing touches on The Solar and Wind Expo, property owners everywhere are looking forward to repairs, additions and upgrades to their homes and facilities. And The Expo and your participation are here in the nick of time to help them!

The theme for this edition of the newsletter is "Power." Relative to all we do, power is the constant fuel that feeds the engine of life.

Everything is fueled by power and the energy it creates. But power as we know it today is poised for renewal. Unhealthy power sources will soon give way to clean and healthy power sources that will lead to harmony in our everyday living.

This renewal will be spearheaded by you, the exhibitors of The Solar and Wind Expo. There is power in your numbers. Exhibitors united at The Solar and Wind Expo represent the power of the clean-energy industry to change attitudes and to shape the future.

And let’s not forget the Expo attendees. They are equally important for their power in numbers. They, with the guidance of our exhibitors, will make informed decisions to transform the way they use power from an outdated source to a fresh, clean one. Each one of these power renewal decisions will demonstrate the power of the consumer to change policy at the speed of (sun) light.

We are quickly reaching our goal of a full venue, and as we do we would like to thank the many visionary companies involved in this year’s Expo. From conducting seminars to providing video for television spots promoting The Expo, to intellectual and financial support – you all have made a powerful impact on The Solar and Wind Expo, and will surely make an even more powerful impact on the multitudes of energy-users looking for clean, reliable and predictable energy. My hat is off to all of you!

Please take time to read through this newsletter, especially the how-to section as we are including details and direction for our exhibitors who are preparing for the event. If you are still on the fence about becoming an exhibitor, read on and this issue will convince you and we still have a few spaces left. The Expo staff and I look forward to a great event for all involved.

Net zero energy home, Tesla, kids’ scavenger hunt among exciting additions to The Solar and Wind Expo
by Alan Cohen
With The Solar and Wind Expo just a little over a month away, we have some exciting new developments to report for both attendees and exhibitors.
First, we are fortunate that the “Living Zero Home” – that the U.S. Department of Energy took around the U.S. for a year – will be part of the Expo, courtesy of exhibitor Daylight Solar. As you might guess from its name, a net-zero home needs no power from the grid. The structure will demonstrate many energy-saving techniques that you can incorporate into your home or business. The Net-Zero Living Home will be hard to miss just outside Exhibition Hall at the Fairgrounds.  Living Zero Home

Also hard to miss will be a Tesla roadster, an all-electric, high-performance sports car – with a 200-mile range to boot – that we recently found out can be at the Expo.

Alongside the Living Zero Home will be a small carport with solar panels (supplied by exhibitor Kenergy) and a charging station where you can power up an all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle. Between the home and carport, we’re hoping you’ll be able to get a nice glimpse of what a future based on energy efficiency and renewable power would look like.

And you’ll have lots of other opportunities to learn from (and hopefully be inspired by) the many renewable power experts and leaders at the Expo.

On Friday, May 7, Ross Tyler of the Maryland Energy Administration will tell how the state is helping its homeowners and businesses go renewable, including a law that facilitates access to solar energy and opportunities for commercial-scale investment in clean energy.

Our keynote speaker – Bob Dixson, mayor of Greensburg, Kansas – is recognized nationally for spearheading his town’s valiant effort to become the greenest city in the U.S. after being almost obliterated by a tornado just three years ago. Dixson will relate how Greensburg was leveled, then regrouped and developed a plan, and is now rebuilding sustainably from the ground up, to serve as a model and inspiration for other communities.
Just after Dixson speaks on Saturday at noon, you’ll want to stick around for the official unveiling of a pioneering three-wheeled, solar-electric motorcycle before it begins a 6,000-mile cross-country trek. The Extreme Bug-E will be powered solely by an electric motor, with a solar trailer in tow to extend its range, and driven by Maryland resident and sustainability advocate Charlie Garlow.

Continuing with this theme, our main speaker on Sunday is a leader in the effort to put more electric vehicles on the road.  Paul Scott, vice president of Plug In America, will give a brief history of the electric vehicle movement and then tell us why EVs should become a much more common sight on our roads in coming years.

Throughout the Expo, you’ll also have many opportunities to become empowered on renewable energy and energy efficiency at free seminars – all given by experts in the field. See http://www.thesolarandwindexpo.com/swe_speakers.html for all the details.

And since we don’t want the adults to have all the fun, we’re hosting a Solar and Wind Expo Scavenger Hunt for kids of all ages! The contest, which will be both fun and educational, will be centered around renewable energy (naturally). Please see the next article for details.

The Solar and Wind Expo Scavenger Hunt!
by Johanna Cohen

There is a fun and educational activity for children at the Expo:  a challenging "Solar and Wind Expo Scavenger Hunt" for kids of all ages!  The activity will start at the entrance to the Expo, and there will be clues and facts scattered throughout the Exhibition Hall.  Each clue will teach the children (and adults, too!) about renewable energy resources.  As you make your way through the exhibitions and demonstrations, your children will be entertained with their own activities and puzzles.  Upon completion, each returned "Scavenger Hunt" will be rewarded with a prize.

Word of the Month

POWER

pow·er
Pronunciation: \ ˈpa u̇(-ə)r\
Function: noun
Usage: often attributive
1 a : ability to act or produce an effect
2 a : having a possession of control, authority, or influence over others
3 a : physical might b : mental or moral efficacy c : political control or influence
4 a : a source or means of supplying energy b : motive power - an agency (such as water, wind and sun) used to impart motion especially to machinery

Power implies possession of ability to wield force, permissive authority, or substantial influence, such as the power to mold public opinion. Pioneers in the field of renewable energy, like The Solar and Wind Expo, our exhibitors and the public who incorporate renewable energy into their daily lives, all serve to mold public opinion and cause an undeniable revolution towards sustainability. There is great power in our numbers collectively. Power may imply latent or exerted physical, mental, or spiritual ability to act or be acted upon, such as the awesome power of flowing water, of the wind and the sun.

Even synonyms for power, Force, Energy, Strength, Might, have relevance. Force implies the actual effective exercise of power, such as the force of wind to propel a turbine. Energy applies to power expended or capable of being transformed into work, such as the boundless energy of the sun to heat homes in an entire city. Strength applies to the quality or property of a person or thing that makes possible the exertion of force or the withstanding of strain, pressure, or attack, such as use The Solar and Wind Expo to build your market strength. Might implies great or overwhelming power or strength, such as the belief that the might of The Solar and Wind Expo and our exhibitors makes right.

Together, we have the power to make positive change in the world and in our lives today and for the future.
